DIY gifts: all our ideas for making your gifts!

The DIY trend is now very visible on the internet, especially on social networks like Instagram and Pinterest. Tutorials explaining how to make various objects are numerous, and even quite addictive: when you watch one video, you watch seven in a row! Here are all our DIY gift ideas.

Why do you want to make your gifts?

It’s a personalized gift, tailor-made for the person you want to please!

  • It’s a way to cultivate new hobbies: knitting, cooking…
  • It’s economical: making a batch of homemade cookies is cheaper than buying ready-made cakes
  • It’s nice to make something to give it as a gift.
  • A unique gift in the world, it pleases the person who receives it!
  • If you forgot to buy a gift and the birthday party is in a few hours, this is also a last-minute solution so you don’t arrive empty-handed!

Some DIY gift ideas

You can prefer edible gifts (candy apples, jams, sweets, etc.) or decorative gifts (candlesticks, photo frames, etc.) or practical gifts ( files, scarves, etc.).

A simple, yet edible gift: chocolate spoons!

Have you ever seen those chocolate spoons, designed to stir hot chocolate and give it a special flavor? Have you also noticed that they cost €5 each? Yet, it’s so quick and cheap (and fun as anything!) to make them at home:

  • Start by purchasing some colorful plastic spoons. You can wrap patterned paper around the handle of the spoon or cover it with glitter.
  • Melt chocolate (dark, white, milk, whatever you prefer) in a bain-marie until smooth. You can add marshmallows or chopped walnuts or almonds to the mixture.
  • Dip the head of each spoon into the chocolate before resting the spoon on wax paper. You can also cover the chocolate spoon with edible glitter or pearl sugar. Let the spoons dry for at least an hour.
  • Wrap the spoons individually in cellophane paper, make a rosette with ribbon before wrapping them in tissue paper. Then present your spoons like a bouquet!

A decorative gift: the scrapbook!

This is a long-term project but one that will make a huge impact! It’s a kind of photo album where you stick, in addition to photos, memories made of paper or thin, light materials. Imagine the emotion when you give – to one of your children, on their 18th birthday, for example – a scrapbook with memories from a lifetime: photos but also childhood drawings and tickets for outings you were able to make together (cinema, zoo, circus, etc.) from their birth until they come of age! But here, you need patience and a sense of organization. As for the necessary materials, there is everything you need at Rougier & Plé , for example.

A practical gift: a hot water bottle for your hands!

We’ve all had cold hands when we head out the door early in the morning for work. If only someone had given us a hot water bottle for our hands! Simply sew two small squares of fabric on three sides, fill with rice, and sew the fourth side of the hot water bottle shut. Then, just pop it in the microwave for 40 seconds just before heading out the door to keep your hands warm while waiting for the bus!

If you have a friend who loves cooking, why not buy her a notebook to write down her recipes and decorate it with drawings, glitter, or even embroider a design on the cover? If you have a friend who is tired of coins cluttering up their wallet, why not make them a piggy bank (an empty tea caddy works well) and cover it with pictures from their favorite movies?

It’s up to you to consider the personality of the person you’re creating a gift for, so you can offer them not only a homemade gift but also a completely personalized one! Your loved ones won’t regret generic gifts from department stores for a second.
